My name is Josiah Henson ~
Good evening. My name is Josiah Henson. I am a former slave who made my way to Canada and formed a settlement for fugitive slaves. I heard that Harriet Beecher Stowe based her famous book Uncle Tom's Cabin on the story of my life. This she revealed in her sequel to Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin. With these pages, I aim to record my memories of the years I have spent on this earth. Much of what you are about to learn here has been written in my memoir called The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself . After Miss Stowe's book came out, I republished my autobiography in 1958 with the title Truth Stranger Than Fiction. Father Henson's Story of His Own Life . I hope my life has had an impact on my fellow African Americans and all those who read of what one person can do to make a difference in their world.
