Conditions for Slaves
FoodSlaves ate only two meals a day, one at noon and one at the end of the day. Meals consisted of a serving of cornmeal and a vegetable they could grow in the small plot given to them for this pupose. A lot of days the evening meal was not eaten until late at night.

ClothingYouth wore a shirt that went to their ankle. Older slaves wore either pants or a gown depending on gender. Sometimes a coat was added in winter and rough hewn shoes were given to each slave once a year.

HousingSlaves lived in rows of one room huts with no furniture at all. They were often given only a light blanket to keep the chill off.
